Alexander Technique in New York

The Alexander Technique is an educational system that helps people use their bodies with greater ease and efficiency in everyday activities. It improves postural and movement dysfunction by engaging the mind and body to reduce physical misuse.

Students of the Alexander Technique learn to release excess tension allowing the spine to lengthen, the joints to open up, the bones to float away from each other, and the muscles to lengthen. This creates a more coordinated body with graceful movement and improved posture. The result is optimal functional mobility, decreased pain, and a greater sense of well being.

In a series of one-on-one lessons with a certified teacher, a student of the Alexander Method develops the skills to execute any action with minimized strain and maximized balance. A lesson typically includes activities like typing at the computer, sitting in and getting in/out of a chair, sleeping well, bending, lifting, carrying babies/bags/purses, walking, running, public speaking, basic posture, playing an instrument or sport, singing etc. There is really no limit to its applications. Any activity you are interested in doing more easily, accurately, gracefully or with less pain is a good thing to work on with the Alexander Technique.

The Alexander Technique was originally known as a treatment for asthma. Gradually it has come to help people with a myriad of problems including muscular skeletal issues (i.e. back, knee, hip, shoulder and neck pain), anxiety, arthritis, teeth grinding, repetitive stress injuries, headaches, post-operative rehabilitation and more. It is recognized and recommended by such notable Medical Doctors as Dr. Andrew Weil.

The Alexander Technique has also been helping Actors, Dancers, Musicians and singers be more effective on stage for over 100 years. It is taught at such notable institutions as The Juilliard School, Yale School of Drama, The Royal Academy of dramatic Arts and the New England Conservatory of Music.
